Yesterday I went down to the Tanzanian Embassy to apply for my VISA. I took the Metro down to Dupont Circle, and it was an easy 2 block walk from there. I gave them my paperwork (& $100) and they said I could pick it up next Friday. Today I got an email from CCS with some info. They said we will receive 1 towel, pillow, set of sheets and a treated mosquito net for our bed. If we need more sheets/towels, then we should bring them with us. Since it is hard to pack for a 3 week stay, and we have to be able to carry all of our own luggage, I think I will take 1 extra set of sheets, and 2 thin bath towels. We will have running water and elestricity, but we need to use moderation and be aware that the electricity can go off w/o warning. Clean drinking water is provided & we need to bring a water bottle to fill for use as needed, such as teeth brushing and use outside. We are not allowed alcoholic beverages or drugs and our curfew is 11:00pm. I certainly don't view this as a problem. :)
Well, I bought two pairs of Teva shoes, as our Program Manager suggested. These have very rugged soles and are waterproof. Apparently, a lot of people use them for hiking. I went to Ebay to get them, and they were about 1/2 the price as on the Teva web site. I am making some long skirts to wear there. We are not supposed to wear pants to our job, and skirts must be below the knees. I figured making the skirts would be a good way to make use of some of my excess fabric. Of course, I have never made a skirt, but I didn't let that deter me. :) I finshed one, and it is good enough. After all, I am not there for a fahion show. I bought some cheap Fruit of the Loom Men's T shirts in various colors. They are lightweight cotton, so I am hopong the will not be too bad in the heat. I am still practising my Swahili, but it is hard w/o someone to speak it to. I have my little phrasebook to take with me, also.
I am working on a Photo album on shutterfly.com to take with me. It is part of our 'culture sharing'. It will have photos of my house, family, neighborhood stores, etc. I will share it with the people I meet in Tanzania.
Well, I still need more money, so I had better get to work!
Feel free to look at my produsts at: www.RoseFairysMoonGarden.com or on Ebay at my store of the same name.
