I am also going to see an old acquaintance who doesn't remember me. Awkward. He is actually a friend of my friend Monica in Switzerland. I had met him a few times and when she knew I was going through Adelaide asked me to give him and ring. I tried ringing a couple of times but there was not reply. I was relieved. But I had to try that one last time didn't I?
"Hello, Uncle Clem's phone"
"Is Clemence there?"
"May I ask who's calling please?"
"Ann, I know him from Switzerland"
"Uncle Clem it's Ann from Switzerland"
"Hello Ann, how are you?" I breath a sign of relief, he remembers me
"I'm well thanks, how about you?"
"Sorry, who are you?" Damn, he doesn't remember me after all.
"Monica's friend, I used to live in the apartment above her"
"No, sorry, I don't remember you"
"You probably remember my husband, Davy, Scottish"
"Oh, the guy who had eye trouble?"
"How is he?".
This wasn't going at all well. He is now 88 and very, very deaf, but somehow or other he admitted that he vaguely remembered me and invited Vinnie and I over for coffee this afternoon. As I say, awkward! He had originally confused me with another Ann from Switzerland who is Scandanavian and he couldn't understand why I was speaking with such a good English accent. Well, this afternoon should be "interesting" to say the least. So wish me luck.
