Vinnie has been tied up in Public Libraries for a couple of afternoons (not literaly you understand) but he has to print and scan stuff so here I sit in the quiet, tranquility and cool of the building, loving it.. Memories of the many times we hung about in Libraries on our London to New York trip last year. They are the best place to head for for free wifi! 

A couple of days ago we went on a tractor propelled tour of an orange farm.  We both lost the will to live as we listened to our guides little home spun poems and endless information on grafting and picking.  But, nevertheless, it was actually quite entertaining.  That afternoon, as I said, was spent at the library and in the evening we went out for posh nosh at Stephano's in Mildura, reputed to be one of Australia's  top chef's. 

Sad to say the posh nosh turned out to be not so good. We started at 7.00 pm and it took us until 11.00 before we could make our escape.  One of the problems was that we had courses accompanied with associated wines but the courses were so slow in arriving that we had either drank the accompanying wine already or it had lost it's chill. 

We asked the waiter what the menu would be (because it is, apparently, at the whim of the chef but they also state that diners preferences can be catered for).  He was a bit sniffy but when I told him that I didn't eat fish, including shell fish, or offal he trotted off to ask the chef.  On the chef's list of offerings that evening were quail and vennison.  I said I don't eat those either so back he went to ask the chef if there was an alternative - lamb.  I said OK provided it's well cooked. He laughed and said "if Stephano was in the kitchen this evening he would ask you to leave!"

Vinnie ordered the vennison and I ordered lamb but when it arrived Vinnie was told the vennison was off (as in not available, not rank), but if he really wanted it he could have it!  Sorry??!! 

In the end we asked for the bill before the last course was served. The waiter was a bit put out and asked why. I said "because I'm bored". But I guess he must have been more scared of the chef than we was of me because he then appeared with the last course instead of the bill and pursuaded us to eat it! But it was not nice.
We paid and asked him to call us a taxi, which he didn't. Customer service is one of my pet subjects and lack of it is one of my pet hates!  All in all not an extremely pleasant experience. You can rest assured that I shall leave a "review" on their web site.

Yesterday we checked into Barossa Valley Tourist Park, Nuriootpa for 2 nights and this morning go on a "Mooka's Special Barossa Tour" which promises to highlight "the Barossa's origins, culture. attractions and vineyards with winery visits and premium wine tasting from 5/6 small, boutique and large wineries."   This time Vinnie will be allowed to swallow instead of spit.  A rare treat.
