Baird Bay Campground

Today we drove down to the coast again to Venus Bay, and trecked 20km off road to a campspot at Baird Bay. Baird Bay is a tiny town, with only 4 permanant houses. Our camp spot was right on the beach and we were witness to some spectacular sunsets. There was one couple and a family at our camp spot and it was nice to get to know people over a couple of nights. The couple were very friendly and on their way from Perth to Lake Eyre. We shared a couple to enjoyable nights with them. The bay was fairly protected so we were able to go for a couple of decent kayaks, and saw some fish and a couple of crabs on the bottom of the sea floor. Walking back along the road from a walk up the beach, Joel got talking to one of the locals, who offered to take Joel out fishing. He accepted and came home that arvo with some whiting and garfish for dinner. I walked down to the beach to greet them and was treated to a pelican feast as they got given the scraps of the fish during cleaning. Our new friends were kind enough to help us and we cooked some awesome beer battered fish and chips for dinner. There was a bit of a mice plague here, but they only came out after dark and we felt fairly safe from them up in our caravan compared to the family in the camper trailer. As we were here for a few nights it was the first time that we were both able to fully relax and enjoy the sunshine.
