backwaters area...meaning that this area has been claimed from the sea by the inhabitants..so there is a massive maze in the innner land, constituted by canals, rivers and small lakes..
to really experience it, the most common way is to take an houseboat, which is an old trading boat, converted into a house, moved with a noisy motor and from which you can only have a look at the bigger canals...i haven't done this so i cannot say that is bad, but i had a more amazing experience.. we (i, bas and silvia) got on a rowing boat...who boated us into the real backwaters...where we were supposed to stay in a local house 2 hours and we get in this village with narrow tongues of land surrounded by water and covered in palm trees...drop our luggage and get the rowing started..
we rowed for about 2 hours, to get to see some of the amazing landscape that surrounds us..after a while we stopped for a nice swim in the river...and then again for the sunset on the lagoon.. wow i really loved this experience, almost like being a local in this village. we went to taste an alchoolic frink taken from the flower of the coconut tree...i didnt really understand how it is taken, but apparently just cutting off the flower of the pland, and waiting it to flow...as soon as you get it it has 2-3% of alchool in it, but if you let it stay for a while, it ferments increasing the alchool concentration, and getting a more sour taste...
in the evening we had a delicious dinner at kumar's home...ok we paid "a lot"...but to me was definately worthed... no campfire this time, but we looked at the fireflies shining on top of the palm trees. we've been also really lucky as today there was a celebration for shiva and, among the things we saw a fireworks show and a parade of women in their sharis bearing a oil lamp.. interesting.. after a nice withut mosquitos, we headed off back to real world... at the end i'm really glad we didnt decide for th houseboat!!! Ciao sfiga,
Personalmente sono rassicurata, ti immaginavo già a camminare da solo con lo zaino 'in the middle of no-wh... show all
