Buenos dias!
Despite an hour of delay on the tarmac, the flight was as smooth as could be.  More importantly, Renu survived the first schlep with her gargantuan pack and finally got to watch 'It's Complicated.' (she was that person laughing out loud every 5 mins).  I have already fallen in love with my Kindle.  It is awesome...thanks JJ!

We arrived in Santiago at about 8am on Friday.  Luckily our room was available, and we got to rest and shower before heading out.  The hotel is located on a nice quiet street in the Providencia neighborhood and is really cute.  On our way out we grabbed a couple empanadas from a market to tide us over until lunch.  We spent the next few hours roaming around the centro and then climbed to the top of Parque Santa Lucia, which was really cool because it's this crazy hill that juts out in the middle of the city and it was virtually empty.  After lunch in Bellavista and more walking in the afternoon (we probably covered at least 5 miles), we rested before dinner n the 'hood.  What really sticks out for me was the fact that we saw not a single other American.  Quite frankly, the city is not my favorite.  Everyone has been very nice, but there's nothing too remarkable to see or do.  For that reason, we decided to take a daytrip on Saturday to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar on the Pacific coast (see next entry).  While Santiago may not make our 'best of' list, it certainly provided a perfect entree into our trip with a safe, mellow vibe.

wait? What's the reason you decided to take a side trip to Vina and Valpo? Cause you didnt like Santiago? Or was it because I suggested you must see Vina and Valpo :)

Thanks for posting the great photos of Vina and Valpariaso...made me feel at home.

Safe travels.
