We were on turnpikes all day.  Turnpikes are in a world of their  own making.  Service areas with gas, restrooms and fast food.  No exits, unless you pay.  All  the way through Ohio and Indiana the land was flat. corn to the right, corn to the left.  Randi looked at a map  and saw we were heading for Lake Michigan.  Let's spend the night by the lake, she says.  She programed the GPS to get us to a KOA campground near the beach.  It was 9PM so we bought some green firewood that did not burn, drank some wine with cheese and crackers and watched the campfire smoke.  In the morning we plan to get some excerise on the Kal Haven bike trail  and check out the beach at South Haven before hitting the turnpikes again.

July 14-We drove to South Haven and walked on  the beach.  Looks like Southern California.  Then we unloaded the bikes and rode on the Kal Haven trail, the trail runs 33 miles alongside a river and farms.  We saw hemp  plants (wild) growing alongside corn.  After lunch and some sun at the beach we hit the road at 3pm.  It is 6:30 and we are at a rest area in Iowa.  Free wifi.  Nels

Hello to Sue, Linda and Marybeth.  Had such fond memories of our week on Lake Michigan that I forced Nels to dirve 100 miles off track to go to South Haven.  The KOA was nothing to  write home about but I loved walking on the beach, soaking up the sun, and the bike ride through the town and on the wooded trail.  It was  a perfect day! It feels like a storm is brewing as I write this outside the Iowa visitor center.  It is very windy and the sky has been just electric.  Lots of miles to go before we sleep.  Love, Randi
