The guys are John, Jalian, and Nick... cool surfer dudes from California who've been friends since childhood ... Jalian is a clothes desgner for surfers whose clothes have become famous in Japan and he is now kinda famous there (and wealthy)... Jalian bought the land and let his friends join in... They built a big main house - open concept semi-outdoor structure 2 stories tall with a big kitchen, living room, sewing room, and sleeping space for guests... they also have 3 separate "shacks" for themselves to live/sleep in... they have had the land for 3 years now and have built garden beds, planted many many fruit and food trees and grow greens, flowers, and medicines... they are interested in Permaculture yet have little experience in gardening or Permaculture
After i garden with them and really look around, i reveal my knowledge of gardening and permaculture and they are stoked... after 3 days of helping them, Jalian offers for me to stay on as long as i like and build my own shack... YA! i am thrilled to have a place to stay and a work trade... they say i can come and go as i like! i love Hawaii sooo much!!
on the 13th i go to a krshna temple for free dinner and there is Nejmah and Julia - my sistars from Victoria!! Yah! I knew they were arrived the day before but my cell phone is down and i give up on finding them for a while... BUT there they are at the Krshna temple and we hug and kiss with delight!! tehy've found another Canadian (from Haida Gwaii no less!) named Jesse -- we decide to go adventuring together since Jesse rented a mini van and wanted friends to travel with... a new adventure begins...
We go to Green Lake and take down their camp and start out drive accross Hawaii's middle to the west side of the island..
We are lead by Nejmah who lived in Hawaii for 2 years a bout five years ago... she guides us to the City of refuge where there is an old Hawaiian Temple site... we cant go up so we watch for dolphins in the "dolphin rest area"... haha ... a place where they sleep at night...
we buy snorkels and head for the coral reef nearby and im stoked! ive never snorkelled and am excited to try it out! We go to the reef and jump in... WOW! beautiful coloured fish everywhere! sooo many! yellow and blue, striped and spotted, incredible Rainbow fish... crazy waters for sure and i dont wanna get out! i try to touch the fish but they always avoid my hands... i also get a weird feeling about sharks and stay close to shore uneasliy checking behind me occasionally for sharks... funny how much JAWS must've affected my psyche!
wheni get out there are 2 sea turtles on the edge of the reef... i sit beside thema nd watch amazed at being 3 feet from them. i wanna touch them too but dont dare try..
nejmah and julia and jesse wanna go on a hike but i wanna snorkel more so i stay and they plan to retrun for me later... people start pointing out the sea turtles being in the reef again and so i jump back into the waters and snorkel around watching one from behind... it swims quickly and strongly into the rocks and i cant find it anymore... i give up and am pleased to have had a sea turtle encounter my first time snorkelling... my medicine name is Painted Trutle Who Sits on a Log and Sees.... so i fel a strong connection to the turtle and feel blessed to have had contact. their eyes are like dinosaurs' eyes and one turtle had looked long and deeply at me -- it kinda made me feel wierd... anyway i felt thankful and blissful as they gang retruned for me to continue elsewhere on our adventure...
we go to a organic farm nearby up the mountain of Mona Kea beside Kona, owned by a cool man named John, where Nejmah had stayed before (and Azule had stayed for a year as well, about 5 years ago). we make music and food and sleep in his orchard... sweet and kind... abundant fruit trees, bananas, avocados, guavas, passionfruits, coconuts, macadamias, and a bunch more i am unfamiliar with... jack fruits, lychees, coffee, starfruits, some others i dont know how to spell... its amazing and wild... open concept house and view of the ocean. i recharge my camera so now i can finally take more pictures!
The next day Nejmah leaves us for a place in Puna called Coco's... we head up north of Kona to a remote oasis beach where we swim nude and snorkel and hang out till sunset...
we drive to another beach more north and sleep on the ocean beach... SWEET! life is beautiful on Hawaii!!
