We've moved in!

I got the keys on Monday as our bed/couch was being delivered. Luckily the owners were happy for me to lug a lot of things across on Monday and Tuesday. Stocking the fridge and doing some basics shopping also made things a lot easier! On the weekend Matt and I did an IKEA run, bought a TV and found a Target to buy a kettle, toaster, and other basics. On Wednesday our IKEA purchases and TV were delivered so Matt and I took turns playing Bob the builder! Still waiting for Internet to be connected so hopefully I can post this soon!

On Sunday night Matt and I went into Manhattan for Veroon’s birthday dinner at a Middle Eastern restaurant. He’s one of Matt’s work friends. Good company, delicious and cheap – always a great combination!

Matt left work early Wednesday to wait for more deliveries so I could leave to go to pick up Lulu and Tigger. We thought we had organised for them to be delivered to us in Brooklyn, but when it wasn’t the case and they wanted to charge us another $600 we thought we’d get them ourselves!

I took a train to JFK and then got a cargo bus to the Lufthansa cargo area. I had to wait about an hour before I could get the documentation that arrived with them. Then I had to get a cargo bus all the way back to the start and get another to get to customs. It was a bit scary because it was dark, in the middle of nowhere with planes taking off on the runway right next to where I was walking! When I got to customs they told me all the correct documentation wasn’t included. I started crying because it took me so long to get there and I wasn’t sure if especially Tigger (fourteen-and-a-half) was OK. Luckily they took pity on me and Matt was able to take a photo of the missing documentation and e-mail it to them. I was not happy since I had e-mailed it all to Dogtainers who were flying the animals across and should have included it. It took more than an hour to get back to Lufthansa cargo.

Luckily I got Lulu and Tigger almost straight away. We had organised a taxi to pick us up but I had to change the time they came because it was taking so long. When I tried ringing them there was no service. Luckily the gods took pity on me again because there was a pet transport guy there who offered to drop us off. It was a good thing too because Tigger didn’t smell too good! I suppose it was expected after being in the container for over 24 hours! Tigger, for those who know him, can be a bit of a grumpy bum, but he was so happy to see me that he rubbed his head against my hand and purred and Lulu was going nuts trying to get out. When I got home we had to bath Tigger as best we could. What a welcome home! Poor Tigger; he still didn’t smell so good… From leaving home to getting back with them took about 6 hours but it was worth it!

The next morning I took Lulu for her first walk at the Prospect Park off-leash area. The area is HUGE! She was a bit overwhelmed but loved running around. Tigger’s been sleeping a lot and luckily has not wanted to go outside. He’s decided he likes Lulu’s bed better, so poor Lulu has to sleep in Tigger’s bed. :-) I took Lulu for another walk this morning, this time wearing her I-just-escaped-from-jail doggy jumper. It was a bit chilly and there was even frost on the ground! She’s getting her rabies shot today, but I’ll wait a bit before I take Tigger – don’t think he’s ready to go back into his container yet…

Hi Rene,
Congrats on moving in to your apartment. It must be a huge relief, especially now that you have Tigger and Lulu with you. I can understand the rollercoaster of emotions you have been feeling with so much going on and then to be given the run' a round when you were trying to pick up your pets. At least you guys are together now. Hope you guys have a great holiday season.
Take care
