Yesterday (Wednesday) I had to draw the certified cheques for the rent, security and brokers' fees. On my way to the bank I went into the post office to get a stamp – horrible, dirty little shop, nothing like Australia Post! After waiting for a while because the second lady was listening to a story about a deer killing a motorist who was trying to save it, she decided to help me. I asked for the stamp and when I gave her $20 to pay for the $1.05 stamp she demanded something smaller or that I pay with a card. When I said it was all I had she stormed off in a huff; appearing with the change about 5 minutes later. Then she proceeded to tell me off, and said that if I came so early in the future I had to bring smaller change! Talk about customer service!

A bit further along Prospect Park I came across another movie being filmed! It's called "A Winter’s Tale" and has Russel Crowe and COLIN FIRTH in it! I would have passed out if I saw him! Lots of fake snow, horses and carriages - I love the period dramas!

America’s banking system is a bit weird – they still love their cheques and you can’t transfer money into anyone’s account if you have their BSB and account number. You have to do a wire transfer which costs $35! You can’t even do it with the "teller" – they have all these “personal bankers” who have to help with “more complex services”! The guy was a real sleaze, but I had to love the popcorn and coffee machine in the bank… I still can’t quite get over having to pay the brokers $5 760 to find an apartment for us! there is a big market here for you!

The rest of the afternoon I wandered around the area near our apartment to see what’s there. Lots of pet shops, cool little shops, bars, restaurants, etc. so will be fun to explore. Went into a Barnes and Noble bookshop and have never seen such a big section of bibles! Lise would have loved all the crochet magazines!

Some people are going nuts with the Christmas decorations! When we first got here there will still some Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations up, but now they are being replaced. I’m constantly seeing people precariously clinging onto tall ladders trying to hang their decorations! In the photo the blow-up carousel actually rotates!

There’s a craft/ art holiday market next weekend which I am very keen to check out. Otherwise been painting a bit, organising utility connections and waiting to move in and for our things to arrive so we can properly settle in!

Wow! I'm in the wrong profession... I need to move to America and become a broker! Fancy being paid for something we do in Australia all the time, thank god for! Another movie and Colin Firth!!! I'd be constantly hanging around that place :)
