After polishing off the delicious Korean fried chicken the night before at Boku, Matt and I both woke up with a terrible MSG hangover; and no it wasn't the cocktails! We felt better after heading back to The Hummus Place for some more delicious fare. We were supposed to meet a realtor who was going to show us a few places, but he never contacted us so we headed back to Brooklyn. We needed some supplies and found a shop called "Trader Joe’s" to stock up. For all the Wal-Mart’s and massive shops you see on TV and movies there aren’t any in Brooklyn! We got the basics but they mostly stock their own brand so not much variety. You also have to buy toiletries and cleaning stuff at a pharmacy. Will need to shop at lots of little shops or do a massive shop at a Walmart further away once a month…

I forgot to mention that we found our first pho restaurant on Saturday afternoon. For those who don’t know Matt and I religiously go to I Love Pho 264 on Victoria Street in Richmond at least once a week. We love it! We’re such regulars that they know our order and the family who owns it gave us a t-shirt because we were leaving! The pho wasn’t bad but didn’t come close to becoming our next regular spot…

We had to get up really early Monday morning as we had to be at the Social Security office by 7am. We were expecting long queues, but ended up with ticket number 1! Matt’s is being processed but doesn’t arrive for another week or so. It sucks cos we can’t open a bank account until he’s got it and it makes it a bit harder to apply for apartments, etc. I have to go to Homeland Security and apply for a permit to work before I can apply for a Social Security number.

After Matt went to work I killed time at Starbucks before speaking to a broker about apartments. You have to go through a broker here to find an apartment. Technically they find a place for you and you have to pay them about one month’s rent for the service! Rent here is pretty steep – made harder by the fact that we need a place with a bit of outdoor space for Lulu and our one cat (we actually have three, but thought it better not to divulge this…). In the afternoon I had a look at a few places. The first one was great and Matt and I both had another look at it last night (Tuesday). We’re applying for it so fingers crossed! It has a small gym on our floor which is great cos I don’t think I would have wanted to go out in the cold to go! Luckily there is a laundry (on our floor too) – I would have hated lugging washing to and from a Laundromat streets away! It's on Atlantic Avenue which has great little shops, bars and restaurants and it also has a dog run for Lulu at Brooklyn Bridge Pier 6 - a 5 minute walk. Hope we get it… You can see it here http://www.corcoran.com/nyc/listings/display/2462943

I met another broker on Tuesday morning and looked at some more apartments. It was raining so got a bit wet! When I was walking home from the metro stop it started snowing! Thanks for all the updates on the warm Melbourne weather…

We're renting an apartment in Windsor Terrace at the moment. It's a little too far out for a permanent place, but works great for now. I've attached a few photos of it. The apartment we are applying for is in Brooklyn Heights, so much closer to Manhattan and an easier commute for Matt.

Unfortunately our container’s been delayed so it’s not arriving in NY until 11 December. It takes about two weeks to clear customs and to be delivered. I think we’re probably going to be living in our new place with nothing for a few weeks… We’ll also have to re-schedule the departure of the pets; miss them too much already :-(

Matt’s already full steam ahead at work. Looking forward to exploring a bit more on the weekend.
