We left Marrakech in the morning and took a road over the Atlas mountains to Ouarzazate, a very beautiful journey. We got fairly close to the peaks, still snowy in spite of the waning winter, and it was the first time I saw snow closeby. Not much and I could not touch it from the bus, but still nice. It's funny, though, to see snow for the first time when I'm in Africa.
From Ouarzazate we dodged the flies in the bus station and took another bus to Boumalne Dadès, near where people told us there were some interesting sites of natural beauty. In the bus a guy who works as a guide for these areas started talking to us and, as he seemed to be different from the usual people who come to talk and we would need a guide anyway, we decided to hire him after coming to his house and sharing tea and dinner.
The plan was to spend three nights in the nearby valley of roses and gorges and then two more in the desert. The first three were excellent, we spent most of each day eating and talking and the rest walking through the wilderness, often following a river (and sometimes having to cross it with the icy cold water up to our knees - once we even followed it through a short tunnel).
A very welcome break from the cities, and this time we got much closer to what we expected of the country - rather barren landscapes with the occasional cultivated areas and villages.
