Betuca was leaving on wednesday for Morocco, so Elias and Hassan spent most of the night we were in their house giving advice to him about what to see, how to behave etc. And all the time I was there listening to them, to the Moroccan music and thinking. I had thought it would be better not to return to Portugal right away, as I intend to go to a hospitality club meeting in Valencia that Juanjo is helping organize on the 16th. I was going to stay in Spain, but since the main goal was saving money by not going back and Morocco is a lot cheaper and all the ambience and talk made me really want to come to Morocco, here I am now.
First we took a bus to Algeciras and then we crossed by boat to Tanger and my first impression was horrible. All the time in Tanger there were people coming to us to offer to "guide" us anywhere - to a hotel, to the tourist attractions, to their houses to drink tea... and it was really hard to get them to stop pestering us, saying no many times is not nearly enough. Some of them even got to the point of following us against our will and then demanding money for their "guidance". Argh. We were told people here were very friendly, but it is hard to meet the real people when the tourist flies are swarming around...
Anyway, Tanger was only a stop to rest, our first real destination was Chefchaouen, and this was really nice. It is the Moroccan capital of three things, it seems - weed, tranquility and... blue. A very calm town here, we could walk around peacefully and not be bothered, except by the ocasional questions: "Haxixe?" "Vous fumez?". I am glad now I came to this country, this town at least was worth it for two things - the medina, with all its maze-like streets in light blue, looking like snow and ice and the beautiful mountain that borders the town.
Looking forward to the next stop, in Marrakech.
