I had to take care of some practical things here, so my time with the city was really short. And my train from Oslo was already almost four hours late due to a power shortage. Then I had to find a place to do my laundry, find out how and when I could get to the Åland Islands and spend some time in the internet to answer some important messages and try to find out hosts for the cities I still don't have one. When I was finally done with all this, a really heavy and long rain started and, my umbrella being locked with my luggage at the train station, I didn't want to venture into the city... Back to the internet to write some long overdue hospitality club comments and then to meet my host, Ola, with whom I spent most of the evening talking over some czech beer, viking mead and some almost beer (3.5% stuff that is the heaviest they are allowed to sell in Sweden after a certain hour.) to round it up.
The next day the weather was more merciful and I actually could walk the day away around Gamla Stan (the old part of the city) and its surroundings. The old town is really nice, with its colourful and small buildings all close to each other, separated by cobblestone streets in a style that reminds me a lot of Aix-en-Provence. Add to that an excellent blueberry ice cream, some very beautiful churches, one more evening of talking to your host over some more almost beer and you have your very fine day in Stockholm.
The last one was occupied with a visit to the Historiska museum, where there is a nice collection of medieval church art and a large section dedicated to artifacts of Swedish viking era. Then some more walking around the central archipelago and on to the boat that will take me to Finland.
I decided to take a break from the pictures here and see the city only through my own eyes, so there will be only memories of Stockholm. Maybe I will take some later, as it now nears the top of my "must return" list.
