Winton Day 29

How sad this morning was the last time I will see mum & dad, Phyllis & George for a couple of weeks. We all were up & packed by 7am but all went our own way we have to head back within 10 days now via the east coast, mum & dad taking a lot longer. Phyllis & George are going via Lightening Ridge. I guess all good things come to an end eventually.

We hit the road by ourselves at 7am, pointing our car towards Winton. The road out of Mount Isa is spectacular very hilly & green.

When we turned right onto the Landsborough Highway the scenery changed dramatically flat as flat can be. Just Spinifex grass & a few token trees here & there. This land is cattle country, you could see lots of poor cattle gathered around dams with brown dirt all around them not much in the way of food to munch.

The road was like riding on a roller coaster so many bumps & small hills we travelled up & over a few bumps, they say crest we say jumps as that's what we did flew through the air going over some of them & there was a head wind which meant petrol was being sucked up fast.

We stopped off at Mckinlay Road house for a top up of fuel. This must be a popular food stop for the Road Trains 3, 4 carriage road trains opposite the road house. Next to the road house was Walkabout Creek Hotel, where they filmed part of the Crocodile Dundee movie so a few photos around the place.

We had another quick stop off at another cute hotel, The blue heeler, then continued our journey. One part of the trip we disturbed a huge flock of Kites all feeding in the grass beside the road. When we drove past hundreds flew around us.

We saw 5 curlew birds (road runners) in a field, Cute. We are back in emu country saw heaps of emus in fields one pair with about 5 chicks. After the mother Emu lays the eggs & they hatch the father emu takes over raising the young chicks. Sounds great to me.

We arrived at Winton at 1.30pm. Found a caravan park Matilda Country Caravan Park, it's a small clean park with goats near the reception.

We set up quickly & headed straight back to town for lunch. Pies & drinks in a bakery we saw on the way in lucky we weren’t long they shut at 2pm every day.

After lunch we explored the town taking many pictures. Across from one hotel in the middle of the road is a pond with pelican sculptures. We headed for the souvenir shop & bought a few items. Mum & dad then drove past the town spotting us & stopping shortly for another kiss & cuddle before they were on their way again heading towards Longreach. We walked to the back to the shops to check out Arno’s wall a very large concrete wall with piles of junk laid into it. Motorbikes, the kitchen sink, stove, car parts & heaps of other stuff. Very interesting walking around seeing what is concreted in. Jay & the kids got back into the car & drove to the other end of the shopping centre while I walked taking photos of the many old buildings. North Gregory Hotel where Waltzing Matilda was first played. Corfield & Fitzmaurice general merchandise. The statue in memory of Banjo Patterson. The statue of the story of Waltzing Matilda in the centre isle of town.

We then paid to go into the Waltzing Matilda centre watching a short show about the story. Then we walked thru the museum side of things. Jay & Braiden loved this sitting in all the old cars & trains.

Took another photo on the way back to the van park of old cars with a sign Dun Travelling very cute.

It was then back to relaxing & taking it easy before a huge travel day tomorrow to get as close to the east coast as we can.

Guess who just arrived George & Phyllis they decided to stay the night here to. Jay & the Kids just got out of the pool they are cooled whilst I’m still hot & sweating typing away.
