Where I stayed
It's an extremely hot day today at 38o. So underground is the best place to be. We left camp at 9am after a load of washing.
1st on the agenda was Tom's Real working Opal Mine. We decided to do the self guided tour. $10 an adult & $5 a child. Mum was shown the map to where everything was. Big mistake. We all put on a hard hat & headed underground, mum with the map leading the way.
The underground mine had mining equipment, explosives, (hopefully not in working order). We found some opal in the rock behind mesh. Jay couldn't help himself but start up the drill naughty naughty. It was working. They had mine shafts everywhere. Mining equipment displays. We got down to approx 12.41m underground. Nice & cool down here
Above ground we had a bit of a noodle. Jay found a small rock with some opal. The rest of us had no luck.
Next we headed to Crocodile Harry's. It was out of town abit along a dirt road. This is a very quirky place. He must of been a real ladies man & quite a character. He passed away in 2006. Entry is $5a & $2c in a honesty box. His house has sculptures of naked ladies everywhere. There were hats, undies & bras hanging all over the walls & heaps of signatures of visitors from all over the world covering the walls. A carved out crocodile, flowers & more naked ladies.
We headed to Fayes underground home next. A couple actually live in the house & give tours of their home. His personal tour cost $5a & $1.50c. He was a very friendly gentleman full of information of the history of the house & beginning of Coober Pedy. Only 50 years ago there was nothing here. Faye started out as a chef but was sacked when she refused to cook green meat
This afternoon we relaxed going in & out of the pool. It's so hot.
At sunset we headed up to the Big Winch to take photos our last night here. Jay, myself, Annabel & Braiden then went back to Johns restaurant for some hamburgers for tea.
It was still very hot at 8.30pm when we all had cold showers & went to bed.
