because our sense of time is skewed drastically, and Italian trains take their sweet time getting to their destination, we arrive in Cinque Terre, a group of five small villages on the coastline known for pesto and focaccia, a total tourist, vacation spot on a Friday night at 9pm... without any sort of reservation. sweet. we go from Monterosso, to Vernazza and cannot find a single place with an open room. eventually, we settle in the final town, Riomaggiore and find a room [at a steep price and an even steeper climb up the cliffs] where we share a bed [actually two twin beds pushed together with double size sheets. hooray for sharing a bed with a dude]. beautiful view though.
the next day we tackle the trail that connects the five villages, through vineyards and cliffs and lemon orchards and towns and everything that is picturesque Italian countryside, all the while the Mediterranean Sea is poundng the rocky cliffs at your side. we finish the trail in under three hours, and reward ourselves with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, focaccia and a bottle of red on our balcony overlooking our tiny Italian town. dinner later is pesto pizza, but the final reward is gelatto, which is too good not to eat it all the time.
