After our lovely buffet breakfast we put our luggage out in the hallway to be loaded onto the coach. Once we were on the autobahn on our way to Rothenburg our tour director, Bob, had a talk to us about our optional tours. Because there are only 17 so us, instead of 40, some tours will not be available, so we have to choose some alternatives.
The medieval walled city of Rothenburg was really delightful. We were supposed to watch a mechanical glockenspiel re-enactment of an historic event, but the mechanical bits were being serviced, so we had lots of free time after our walking tour of the old city to check out the Christmas museum, and to have an authentic German lunch in a restaurant established in 1596!
After lunch we continued on our way to Munich, the capital of Bavaria. where we saw the site of the 1972 Olympics, and the headquarters of BMW, which is shaped like a four cylinder engine! Bavaria used to be ruled by a Greek king, so lots of it shows a Greek influence. We also saw the summer palace that was built for one of their queens. She was from Venice so the king had a canal built at the front of the palace with a Venetian gondola and gondolier.
We had a walking tour of the Old part of Munich city, before being left outside a beer hall. We all went in and had a beer, but then Tom and I left and found a Starbucks with free wifi.
After a while our coach collected us to take us to our hotel - the Westin Grand, and grand it was!!!
