The Hound was due to depart Hollywood at 06.30. The scenic journey back up the coast to Santa Cruz took around 10 hours. I decided to walk up the hill to my room and on the way felt relaxed and satisfied that Santa Cruz would be more 'normal' than LA.

By the time I arrived at my motel I was a little doubtful having seen a cat under a blanket on the lap of a man in a wheelchair which he pushed along by sit down walking. To my left a man offered me a green origami swan whilst to my right I was approached by a man asking me to ride his bike up the hill for $10 (I thought my back pack was fairly prominent but perhaps I was wrong).

That night I was treated to a guided tour of Santa Cruz nightlife by James, a new friend that I’d met in Monterey.  It was the day before Halloween which is huge in America so most people were dressed up in, well, whatever they felt like actually – there seems to be no relevance at all.  It was a good night (despite the loss of my jacket, a couple of new bruises and the discovery of unexplained notes in my bag).

James showed me round the rest of Santa Cruz over the next couple of days.  It’s a  hot spot for surfers with a really laid back feel and a very beautiful beach.

Strange people in Santa Bruz. S'pose you didn't meet Santa Claws on your special Halloween? Take comfort from the fact that meeting all these people is good for the broadening of your mind.
Love Dad.
