Where I stayed
Newcastle YHA

So here I am in Newcastle.  I must admit when the Greyhound was bringing us in, I thought to myself, where the hell am I.  We drove through really uninviting coal works and past the port.  It really felt like I had arrived in Sheffield or somewhere grim up north!!  Luckily enough the bus kept going and we arrived into the really nice part of town.  It is really alive with cafes, art culture and amazing architecture.

I was going to have a little snooze as I had been up so early but I decided against it and walked into town.

The YHA that I am staying in is an old Gentlemans Club.  There is a grand entrance with a sweeping staircase, old leather sofas and chandeliers.  It feels really cosy!

Before lunch, I walked into town as I needed to get a couple of things from the supermarket and also to find a new pair of sunglasses as I have finally broken my Fossil pair.  I'm so sad.  The screw had fallen out of the arm and I can't find it.  They were my favourite pair so need to find something that matches.

After lunch I went on a mission walking around the coastline taking in the sights.  Firstly I walked along to Newcastle Beach.  Oh my god, I have never seen an ocean like it.  It was quite windy, however, I don't think that was the cause of the waves.  They were huge.  There were no surfers out there as it was far to dangerous.

I was mesmerized by the ocean and sat and watched it for quite a while.  I then set off again and walked past the Ocean Baths.  They have made an area safe to swim in even though it is full of sea water and the waves do crash in to it every so often.  I then walked around to Nobby's Road which led towards Nobby's lighthouse.  The causeway which I walked along was not there originally.  This was built by the convicts in the 1800's.  You couldn't walk up to the lighthouse so I walked around the side of the island where there was a pier.  There are warning signs everywhere about walking along it at your own risk.  I thought about it and then made the decision to walk up there.  It was pretty hairy as the waves did fly over the top, but I took my waterproof jacket with me to try and keep myself dry.  If I can upload it, I will put the video on there that I did. I saw lots of people get soaked and also nearly washed away. Maybe a little silly to ignore the signs!

After getting wet but surviving the walk, I carried along the coastline back towards town to the Queens Wharf Tower (or The Penis as it's known my the locals).  I wanted to climb up it but when I got part of the way up, I found out it was closed for maintenance.  Boo!

I walked a little further taking in the wonderful architecture of the buildings, before heading back to the hostel.  This is a wonderful place and very pretty once you scratch the surface.

Had an early night as I wanted to get up early again to do some more walking!
