We stop briefly in Tena to pick up some supplies at the market...ingredients for a spaghetti bolognese and Gamma steak dinner. We negotiate badly with the market traders but get what we want. We are then on our way to Rio Verde...set in the foothills of Banos..approximately 20 minutes drive from the town through 5 tunnels...We were assured if the volcano exploded - as the foreign office damingly predicted - the likelihood is the lava trail would be on the other side. as it turned out the peaks of the volcano were still snow capped and there appeared to be little activity. The hostel was run by a cheery and very likeable Scott, Richard in outstandingly beautiful scenery ripe for rafting and canyoning.
Banos is a small town like Otovale...geared to adventure tourism. Its full of sports shops, internet cafes and one strip of bars and clubs. We also found a great beauty parlour and all the girls lined up for massages and facials. We spent three nights here, visited the hot springs which are great at night under the stars, we rode lively small horses mostly galloping on roads which was surprising given the vast amount of scenery.
The hostel is a great place to relax in...Richard has set it up to high building standards with nice hot showers, a large dining and kitchen area and lots of outside space for volley ball or relaxing in hammocks. As always i could have stayed longer but we were only there 3 days....and Peru was beckoning us.
