The security guard in the bank asked me to remove my dark glasses...problem was i couldn't see a thing without them ...i was trying to change a ripped $20 note which had a small piece missing.  As there was a huge queue i asked in my broken Spanish if he could help me .. without hesitation he grabbed the note from me, whizzed past all the other waiting customers and changed it for a fresh one..i could have hugged him...but he'd have probably pulled a gun on me so instead i just tipped him and stepped out into the warm sunshine...

I was in Otavalo at the start of the tour the famous market town.  Its about 3 hours from Quito set in lush landscapes with small town charm and a great market for ponchos, blankets , bags and scarves..the tiny hostel we stayed in was clean and comfortable with hammocks in a pretty courtyard garden,  It also served the best fruit pancakes for breakfast.  One day is enough but avoid the weekends if you can and have fun negotiaiting...as always the ecuadorians are friendly ...you will come away loaded up!
