Oh, tactile keyboard, how I miss you! Before I left for Phuket, I bought a new computer which is causing me some grief. As I bought it 48 hours before getting on the plane I did not have the time to sort it out. So, I have been operating between my iPad, android phone and small investigations towards fixing my computer, to no avail.
Granted, these are "champagne" problems. I have more technology at my fingertips than many. And I am learning to use my phone an iPad more than I have ever in the past. But, I miss my tactile keyboard! And the multiplicity of combined technology. And I would like my computer to be more than an expensive DVD player.
So, my good friend Karen happen to see in the paper that two expats hold a computer clinic in a sandwich shop in Chalong. So, despite an extremely rainy day, I packed up the computer and found my way along the 13 kilometers to the shop.
And there they were: my software saviors. I must admit, I have such a soft spot for software engineers. They tend to be my favorite clients for teaching, I have dated more than one, and I hold them on a certain pedestal. It could also be because they seem to magically fix the things I have spent hours trying to sort out.
So, Seth - an expat from Manhattan who seemed genuinely excited to meet a fellow New Yorker and who runs the clinic along with Woody - was able to sort my browser issue, and began exploring some of the other issues. I was somewhat vindicated about my technology frustration when he said "How did this get so cluttered if you only took it out of the box right before you left?" Excellent question. I made a plan to meet him again next week; this is going to take more than one clinic.
However, despite the frustration about technology, what was rewarding was that it reinforced that there is an infrastructure here, and people are willing to help. And that I am beginning to find my way around, even if I keep going in circles around my own neighborhood.
