Five friends and I rented three kayaks and set off down the Potomac. We rented them from a small boathouse in Georgetown located on the Waterfront. Georgetown is a very nice elite part of town where the shopping is high end and the residents include Nancy Pelosi.
We kayaked downstream with Georgetown on one side and Rosslyn, Virginia on the other. The weather was great, not too hot and plenty of sunshine. We kayaked around Theodore Roosevelt Island and towards the Lincoln Memorial. The view of the Lincoln Memorial from the Potomac is amazing. And likewise, the view from the steps on the back of the Lincoln Memorial out on the river is great, perfect to watch the sunset
After having kayaked around Theodore Roosevelt Island, I wanted to go back and explore the island for a bit. To get there you have to take a metro to Rosslyn then cross a walking bridge to the island. The island is wooded with trails running around and up to the water's edge. In the center is the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial with a pavilion and statue of the president. The island is a beautiful piece of wilderness outside the city. It would be a nice quiet place for a picnic or to walk your dog.
The island and river are a great escape from the city... especially if you're missing a bit of Missourah.
