Return to Africa - Mozambique
Entry 21 of 22 | show all | print this entry |
So, finally we have escaped the French Police state, and have returned to Africa!!! We left Mayotte with three on board, Tom me and Katie a young Southern American girl> THe passage was alright except for an extreme lack of wind. We spent 5 days making the 300 mile trip, and had to motor almost 40 hours!!! I spent my 24th birthday on the sea, fairly close to an island of Comoros. The day started not so good, as without wind we were just drifting slowly around... Then, out of nowhere a speedboat with some Comorian fisherman came by with a boat full of fresh caught tuna, and gave me one for a bday present. YUMMY I also seen a mother and baby humpback whale, on the surface, about 10 meters from the boat. It was extrordinary. Me and Katie made a cake, and although she was really sea sick, Katie even made a nice bday dinner(grilled peanuts and popcorn at my request). We arrived to Mozambique and anchored forst for a couple of days at a beautiful island named Quesiva. It had a beautiful white sand beach, clear warm waters and a little village with a few huts, some friendly shy ppl, and some portuguese fort ruins from the 1500's. We even got to trade some sugar for nice fish, and a tshirt for a couple of lobsters. The next stop was Pemba, where we are now. Here we have checked in ( with big problems, and big costs=( ), bought some fresh veggies, met some cool people, and I have even been out dancing!! Mozambique seems to be more expensive than I had hoped for, but I think that the south will be more affordable. The night of dancing was very fun, good music, firendly ppl, yummy cervesa.... We now will be heading more south making our way to Iha de Mocambique. We have picked up a german backpacker(maybe two) who will come with us for a couple of weeks. We are in the middle of finding more crew to continue with us untill South Africa.I am studying Portuguese, and hope to eventually become fluent, but I am still in the preliminary stages. I figure I will need to know the language for Angola and Bresil as well, so might as well make the effort to learn it. So far the food here seems to be most seafood with rice and potates, and piri piri(hot peppers). Pretty tasty, but I am sure that it will change as we get further south. The people of Mozambique are of various Bantu speaking tribes, with each region and village having its own cultural differences, and different dialect. It makes it almost impossible to learn or use an African language here, and even with Portuguese, there are alot of different accents to get used to. Well, that is it for now, more from the next stop...
