So, from the last entry...
WE didn't stay too long in Stone town zanzibar, only one week. That was long enough for me though. I have really realised that I am not really a city person. I get pretty stressed when I don't have nature around me, even if I am in a beatiful tropical african city. I perfected the art of bartering with Christine Tom's mom. I have learned to barter in Swahili, so we worked out a little good cop bad cop routine where I talk to the vendor and play like I really want to buy from him, that I really like him, and then I speak to her in french and she acts like she is disgusted with every price and wants to leave. It is so funny and works everytime!!! We became the offical food shoppers!!! I went out one night in Zanzibar. There isnt much of a night life in Stone town as it is 89% muslim, which means its fairly strict and of course no drinking... I went to town one night with dodo and found this reggae party. It was totally fun and I danced to reggae all night with a bunch of African rastas!!! I could have swore that I was back in Jamaica, except for the fact that there weren't many women out. I think that the muslim women aren't allowed out, and there aren't many rasta women here. I met a young univerity student the other day namend Mohammed and we sat and talked for hours. He told me all about the muslim customs ( wife purchasing, the importance of marriage and family) and about african economics, you name it. He asked me lots of questions about Canada too. I really cant say that the quality of life is any better in the "richer" western world. Sure you can afford to buy more luxuries, but look at the decay of the family system, the casualty with with sex is viewed, alcohol consumption and how we treat our elderly. In africa there is things to be learned on womens rights, recycling systems and more organized education and health systems, butI can not say that either world is superior. Each have their problems and benefits all the same. Personally I prefer the country that provides my body with warm weather, delicious fruits and beautiful land/ocean,but that's just me!!! We left stone town all stocked up and carried on not to far to a lovely spot, which for lack of the proper name I will only call paradise. We did stop overnight at this island that had a old prison that was never used on it, but everything was super expensive there, so we didn't go ashore. Anyways, paradise... The beache was deserted, with white sand. Behind the beach was a jungle of lush green vegetation, many of which bore fruit, there were cows, and I suppose a small village around, although I never made it there. Between the boat and the beach was a lively reef with coo fish, a turtle ( I never got to see it though) and dolphins!!! I have seen alot of dolphins in the past couple of days. They are so cool!!! I did some snorkelling, yoga on the beach and watched a beautiful sunset. Ahhhh, back to my relaxed self!!! This morning we were awoken at 4:00 am by a storm which caused the boat to drift, so we just set off. WE sailed and motored for 10 hours finally arrivng here, wherever that is!!! The journey was blessed my the catching of a huge 2 meter long sailfish!!!! ( It looks like a sword fish, and tastes like heaven!!!) That was super exciting for me as I love catching fish. We started eating it for lunch and will have a bbq tonight to eat the rest!!! I love this life!!! I journeyed into town where I now find myself, and after drinking two cold coca colas ( my new addiction!!!) am totally refreshed, relaxed and ready to eat fish!! I will defintely post pics of this one it was bigger than the last!!! Anyways enough fish bragging... Please keep replying to this cuz I love hearing from you all and I will update again soon with more pics I promise!!! Oh yeah, one more thing, Karaka needs crew!!! If anyone wants to crew aboard Karaka, let me know or check Tom's website, (its linked on my homepage). WE need ppl to come in December or early Jan, and stay for a few months we will be heading from Tanzania to Seychelles, then the mythical islands of Chargos, nestled below the Maldives in the Indian ocean... let me know if you are interested...
