Well, we headed down in altitude and went to Coroico, Bolivia, which is at about 1500 meters in altitude..What we didn´t know was that to get there we had to travel on the ¨world´s most dangerous highway¨!

It was raining when we left La Paz, so we missed seeing the cliffs and the views, and perhaps that was a good thing, since when we retruned back to La Paz, we had spectacular views and the depth of the canyons was boggling! Thankfully we had good drivers both ways.

We arrived in Coroico and sure didn´t expect the beautiful setting which awaited us! Our hostal room overlooked the view and it was something else! We met a really nice pair of travellers, one from Nova Scotia, one from Bordeux, France and we spent 4 hours one day hiking up to a nearby mountain. There were lots of bana trees(with unripe bananas, darn), coffe bushes and fields of coco leaves. They  legally grow and harvest the coco to chew and to make into tea. It´s for sale by the bagful in markets all over the place. The tea is actually an effective remedy for altitude sickness and is part of the tea choices for breakfast in lots of the hostals. It seemed to work somewhat for Robert. We didn´t chew it though.

It was hot and sunny, and despite the altitude, we had a great trip!
It was great to feel well again!

Coroico is the first place where we had to hunt to find things that we felt were safe or that ew wanted to eat. We called it our South American diet plan.

One night when we returned to our room, there was a spider high up on the wall. This was some had to be 3 inches across! Most of it was legs, but it sure was huge. Our first wild creature in SA and it had to be a spider, in our room, and just before we went to bed....UGGGHHHH!!!!
We got the clerk to kill it and when she saw it, she winced and jumped, so I think it was not a usual spider. I took a picture of it for you Darlene, but you can pass on it if you want

Hi Bob & Dawn
Borden and I are sure enjoying all about your trip. Sure sounds like fun, but a little scarry at times. You both must have a lot of energy to do all of the hiking that you have done. Keep the letters coming. All is well here, raining for 2 days now, not much snow on the ground. Mild winter so far.
