There was confusion and chaos boarding the bus and much checking of the passenger list. We were off at 6:15, so had some travel time in the daytime.
We left one of the main border towns in Bolivia on the main highway, and it was a dirt road which was under construction in many places.
The bus ride was something like you would get on at Canada's Wonderland,
There were many washouts that we detoured around. The road was very narrow in many places, especially when we got into the mountains again. At one point we went through a 'gouged out' rock tunnel, and we could have touched the walls on either side!
There was very little traffic, mostly trucks. After about 2 hours, we stopped for a stranded truck, and got off for about 15 minutes. Here we were at a very small adobe house settlement with no electricity, in the mountains, in the night, but the sky was alive with lightning. It was lighting up the mountains and was almost continuous.
As we continued our trip, it started to thunder and it just echoed through the mountains. It was a very unique bus ride.
We´re in Tupiza now, surrounded by mountains, and are planning a four day tour excursion to see the salt flats, geysers, flamingos, thermal springs and so many other things as well, and are really looking forward to it.
