We landed here on Tuesday, December 8. This is a very beautiful city wih hills much like San Francisco, but steeper. The streets are coblestones and the view of the bay is always there.
We´ve ridden the old-fashioned funicular (a type of cable elevator which takes you up and down the hills), walked the streets, taken the metro to the ¨sister city¨of Vina del Mar. We´re really getting into ¨vacation mode¨.
Our first experience with a hostel has been good and we´re meeting some very interesting people and getting lots of travel information.
We headed to Santiago on Thursday, December 10, travelling by bus and subway and are feeling quite confident about navigating the transit.
Everyone has been extremely helpful, and very willing to assist us with directions, realizing we have no spanish.
Our hostel hosted a BBQ, which, as we travel here, seems to be a common practice.
We had heard about the possibily of pickpockets in crowded places, and we got to experience this first hand. We were in a crowded subway at rush hour, and were being ¨jostled about¨and Robert grabbed a man´s hand out of his pocket. There was a team of at least three, two who were distractng you, while the other positioned himself to get to your pocket. Nothing was lost and we´re much wiser for the expeience.
Plaza de Armes in downtown was an endless blocks of huge old buildings with thousands of people walking through the plaza between them. We think all 6 million people were in that square!
We´re heading, by bus, across the Andes to Mendoza, Argentina. It should be a 7 hour trip, but may vary depending on the border crossing.
Unfortunately, we can´t add any pictures, but will do so when we have the right computer.
