Erawan Falls

On my first trip to Kanchanaburi, I missed out on going to the Erawan Water Falls so I figured that I'd have to make it this time. There are few hikes that I enjoy more than walking up a stream to a waterfall. The only thing better than a waterfall is 7 waterfalls. Erawan is nothing compared to Jiuzhaigow in China, but it's the best thing in Kanchanaburi. I had heard that there's a bus that you can catch that will take you to Erawan, but when we couldn't even find the bus station after asking at least 10 different people, we decided to just hire a taxi to take us there. What we didn't know was that it was at least an hour away from town. I guess that would explain why they were charging 800B to get there. We bargained it down to 600B and I didn't even realize that was for both ways. Our driver was very nice and he just waited for us in the parking lot reading a newspaper for at least 3 hours while we hiked and played in the waterfalls. The first part of the walk was very crowded with Thai tourists and a company outing, but the higher you got the fewer people you saw until the top where there were only a handful of people. There's a picture of me climbing straight up a waterfall because I couldn't find another path up to the top. After I got up there, I saw all these other people that clearly didn't do what I did to get up there completely dry and found an easy path down. All in all it's a great day trip out of Kanchanaburi and definitely worth the time to get out there.
Travelers Tip
Whatever you do don't take a tour out to the Falls or you'll end up racing up and down the hill to catch the tour bus back and not get to enjoy the swimming holes at all. If you can, get a few people together it'll actually end up cheaper than taking a tour. More thumbnails ...
