This meant we had to get up at 5am just for brekkie and make a packed lunch before heading back to bed! Good job the cooked breakfast was really good.
Woke up again close to 8 and went to the induction. Usual health and safety videos with hilarious animations of people being blown up and getting limbs cut off with saws. The acting was just as terrible as usual.
After finishing the training we finally started work proper. The roads are all unpaved dirt tracks so a 4 wheel drive is essential. We bombed down the road at 90km/hr and it still took 20 minutes to get to the field. Melville is a big island!
By now it was 10am so we only got to work for 3 hours. Pretty slow going at first as it was very warm but we soon got used to it and I managed to prune 502 trees. Not bad going but on a normal day I need to prune at least 1650 trees, 1 1/2 hectares!
Got back to camp and showered to get rid of all the dirt. You get absolutely filthy because of all the dust and the grass seed gets stock in your socks and shoes which gets really painful!
All clean and fresh I realised that I was pretty sunburnt! Hadn't used suncream and my arms had turned a nice shade of red. Thought I should have known better than that by now.
Jumped back in the car and we set off to go for a swim. There aren't any swimming pools on the island but there are a number of creeks and swimming holes. The water was really clear and a great way to relax after a hard days work. Jumping out of the tree was great fun as well. Decided to go for another swim at the waterfall nearby, 20 minutes drive, and it was amazing! A gorgeous swimming hole under a waterfall. All the others jumped in from the top of the falls but I chickened out. You could see the rocks under the surface and I knew I would get injured.
Felling really refreshed after the swim we headed back for dinner. The food is really quite good, far better than I imagined. Helped myself to seconds before retiring to the room for a little read and was asleep by 9 in preparation for a full day tomorrow.
