So we set off along the Stuart Highway again (I was driving) towards Katherine and Darwin. The road was dead straight and with no speed limit so we were able to cover large distances reasonably quickly. At 11:30 we stopped for the first time at Daly Waters. A tiny little place but the main attraction is Daly Waters Pub. Supposedly the oldest pub in Australia its a weird place with the walls covered in anything they can find. Stubby holders, ID cards, stickers, t-shirts and even underwear! Quite a cool little pub really. Was starving so devoured a fantastic meat pie before topping up the tank and getting back on the road to Katherine.
We made one more stop before we made it to Katherine. Pulled into a petrol station just off the highway and it was covered in anything alien related. Claimed to be the UFO hotspot of Aus and had alien figures outside. It's probably just a ploy to get people to stop there but anything is a diversion after the straight highways.
Hit the road again and finished the couple of hundred k's to Katherine. There was a small bit of flood damage and the road was missing in one place but it really didn't seem like anything had happened. The pictures in the papers showed otherwise. Topped up the petrol again before I switched to the passenger seat for the rest of the drive to Darwin. 708km's in 5 hours! Thats an average of 141km/hr! Not bad going really.
Ant took over the driving and we were in Darwin within a couple of hours. It was unbelievably humid and hardly a cloud in the sky. Like Asian weather and I could get used to it fast. Checked into The Cav backpackers, in a dorm called "Devils Lair", before finding a bar for a proper meal. Shenanigans, your typical Irish theme pub, served a brilliant, and generous, fish and chips and beer was only $8 a jug! Made the most of it before heading to Discovery nightclub and dancing away until 5am and trying to remember the walk home. It's weird how no matter how many drinks you've had, you always manage to find your way home. Even if you've only been there once.
