Seeing as the work had completely dried up in the Yarra Valley and the boss was messing us around we decided to up sticks and move a couple of hours further north to Shepparton, a major fruit picking area in Victoria.

By the time we had packed all our belongings and withdrawn $250 for 2 weeks accommodation the owner had already left and we had to sit around with nothing to do until she reappeared, at about 1pm, and tried to charge us for an extra day even though we were ready to leave at 10am. Paid up and have basically no money left having been under paid.

The drive to Shepparton wasn't exactly the most thrilling but at least it was 100km/hr most of the way so it only took a few hours. After the gorgeous rolling hills around the Yarra Valley, the flat dry brown grassy landscape wasn't that impressive either.

Shepparton is a huge town in comparison with the tiny little Yarra Junction. A town of 55,000 people living basically in the middle of nowhere and there was only 1 hostel in town! Almost everyone who does fruit picking winds up passing through here at some stage so the lack of hostels astonishes me. We spent nearly 2 hours driving around looking at caravan sites and eventually ended up in some dodgy motel 10 seconds drive away from the hostel. We had no idea if we were going to get any work quickly so we weren't going to pay $30 for 1 night when the motel next door was only $20.

The motel room was a bit crappy but at least it had a TV (with manual dial to tune in channels) and a small fridge (to keep the beer cool). Dodgy wet patch on the floor and a lock on the door that was so useless that you could push it and break into the room. Luckily it only turned out to be for one night.

We had got in contact with someone last night and secured a job picking tomatoes this morning so at 5:45am we left to get some picking done. After waiting around for 45 minutes without being told what to do we decided to turn around and go back to bed. 2 hour later we receive a call from the harvest office in town offering us another job picking grapes and seeing as we know how easy it is we were straight back in the car to find out more details. As it was raining we couldn't pick any fruit today so will have to wait another day until we start earning money again.

So as we have secured a job we are now in the backpackers next door and fully paid up for the week. After paying the rent and shopping for the week I only have $12 left in my account so will need to work my ass off for the week and pray for no more rain.
