I only managed to get less than 4 hours sleep in the end before being woken by the downpour outside. Great, I though, just what I need when I have a 4 hour boat trip ahead of me!
Tried to sleep but it was in vain so I checked out and headed to the Internet cafe to drop off my bags. It had stopped raining by now which was a good sign. Went to get breakfast and thought I'd start the new year with a nice healthy breakfast of toast with fruit salad. It was a funny sight sitting there watching the people outside returning from last night, hardly able to walk in a straight line. I settled back and watched Top Gear on BBC World. Decided it was for the best that I took a travel sickness pill. Turned out to be a mistake.
I don't know what the active ingredient was but within an hour it was obvious that it didn't agree with me. I was sitting at a computer hardly able to type and almost falling asleep. I had to hold onto something when I stood up to avoid falling over!
At 11am my taxi turned up and I was on my way to Thong Sala, the main port in Koh Pha Ngan and where I would board my boat. When I arrived there I bumped into Rebecca and Andrew who seemed to be doing a hell of a lot better than me!
Got on board and I was dreading the next few hours. Turns out I needn't have worried. It was smooth sailing all the way, just incredibly boring. Docked in Koh Samui after 45 minutes to let people off/on before heading on our way to Surat Thani on the main land.
After 2 hours I was starving and must have been alright as I never normally eat on any boats! Arriving at Surat Thani was a bit weird. First there are forests of trees literally growing out of the water and secondly the dock area is littered with destroyed boats like some type of graveyard.
Off the boat I had to sit around by the office like a lemon for an hour, waiting for my transport to the bus company office in town. Well office was stretching it! It was a restaurant in the middle of nowhere. There is no other way to describe Surat Thani than shithole. Walking around trying to find a 7 Eleven (man I'm gonna miss these when I get back home) so I could top up my mobile, and there is absolutely nothing! It was dirty and I was glad I would be getting on a bus soon. Although not as soon as I had expected...
My bus should have left at 6pm however come 8:30 I was still in the bloody restaurant watching 50 First Dates on the TV! Not very happy. When we finally got on the bus I sat down and waited for the thing to move. Just as I was drifting off to sleep and hour later I get a tap on the shoulder from the conductor asking me to move so 2 late comers could sit together! I was fuming and told them exactly what I felt about the comment, something along the lines of why should I move when I was on time, before relocating to the only other available seat.
The movie, Hostage, with Bruce Willis was average but when it was over I thought great, I can finally get some sleep. But no. They decided to show another movie, Kingdom of Heaven, until 1am on full volume! Now this isn't the sort of film you can block out as there is constant screaming from people being murdered. When it finally stopped I attempted to go to sleep....
