Sat in bliss writing my diary with the fan in full blast into my face. After a few hours I headed back to the beach to see how hey were doing. I still thought Dave was crazy to spend 3 straight days in the sun, but at least it was mostly cloudy today. After the second days sun I was pretty burnt and knew it was for the best to stay away. Seeing as I kept my face covered all day it looked as white as the geishas I had been reading about the last few days and was quite a funny sight!
We went back to the currypot for a small snack before going back to get showered and changed for dinner. We were going back to the Japanese place from the other night for some more quality sashimi. Dave was trying to by Christmas presents on Amazon and one book was going to cost $58 including shipping to Taiwan! Dave said he would be staying there as he felt a little dodgy.
So I headed out with the Swedish guys to Ku-Kai. It is a tiny place with only a few tables but so good, and cheap! Had a couple of plates of superb sashimi and even though I didn't plan to a couple of beers. Lars and Kim had a battle with a couple of crabs for the bargain price of $1 each!
Back at the hotel I had planned on an early night so come 9pm I was curled up in bed reading a book. Dave was still feeling dodgy so I left him the fan. Just as I was about to go to sleep I heard some whimpering from Dave's bed and he murmured to me to get Gary, the bar tender. He looked terrible and said he was hallucinating and couldn't feel his legs.
I rushed to the bar and asked Gary for help. He sent one of the locals as they are used to the symptom. We told him to go and fetch a doctor and he sped off on his bike, only to come back on his own 5 minutes later saying he wasn't there!
He tried to get us on the back of a bike to go to the hospital and I laughed at him and said how can he get on a bike? He can hardly stand! Managed to find a car and we helped him inside.
First place we came to was closed but they still spent 5 minutes shouting trying to get them to open up. No use so we went down the road to a small clinic which was thankfully still open. Sat him down on the bed and began taking his temperature (40C, not good) and blood pressure before giving him an injection in the backside to calm his fever before taking a blood sample.
While we were waiting for the results the doctor was asking loads of questions but rather than directing them to the patient, he was asking me! I ended up working as sort of a translator whilst he wrote down the symptoms Dave had. To keep him cool they kept applying cold soaked towels to his body. I'm sure the amount of sunburn he had was someway not helping his condition.
An hour later the blood results came back. It made little sense to me really as it was all in French. Either way he didn't have malaria which was a relief. He did have typhoid however, although the results looked inconclusive to me! Good to see the immunisations beforehand worked well!
Ended up back in the reception area getting loads of pills, which I had to pay for as he had no money, and being told he could go home! You have typhoid, go home! Unbelievable! Either way he persuaded them to let him stay the night.
I was happy to get in the car and go back to the hotel, where I then got charged for the car! Decided I needed another drink before heading to check my e-mail. Saw Kim playing online poker so filed him in on the events and told him to keep an eye on Lars, who was also feeling bad, before going back to bed exhausted at 1am. So much for an early night!
