We stopped for over an hour just outside Ninh Binh whilst the driver had his dinner. A couple of girls were getting rather impatient and arguing with the driver. By the time the lights went out it was obvious I wasn't going to get any sleep. I started having really vivid dreams when we neared Hue that the road was flooded and we were being washed away. Dave however dreamt about Chicken Royales and actually believed we were in Brighton. I had to assure him that we weren't.
Couldn't be bothered to look around for a hotel so we stayed at the one where they dropped us off. It was pretty nice anyway and for the same price as Hanoi. At breakfast we booked up tickets to go on the perfume river cruise. We intended to see the tombs and so getting a boat to take us to them for only $2 seemed sensible.
By this time it was pouring with rain so we headed back and I donned my sexy poncho for the first time and started walking to the Forbidden City. It was miles away and even when we arrived we had no idea where to go. A "helpful" cyclo driver kept showing us the way but I wasn't convinced. Dave however kept stringing him along and he followed us for 45 minutes, pointing us in the total wrong direction.
Pissed off we told him where to go and followed the LP map, which wasn't too bad, back to the entrance.
The Forbidden city was rubbish! Most of it had been bombed and there was very little of interest to look at. I swear I'm going to give up visiting UNESCO world heritage sites as they always seem to be a disappointment and there are always loads in each city. Every bloody page in the LP say "This is a UNESCO world heritage site"
Seeing as it was raining, and I couldn't be assed to walk, we decided to hire cyclos to take us back. They are basically a pram for adults. A seat at the front and a peddle bike strapped to the back. Slow but cheap.
Decided to hole up in a net cafe to avoid the rain and caught up with loads of my diary. Once back at the hotel I was glad to see my freshly washed, ironed and packaged clothes lying on the bed. First time I had my clothes washed since Lijiang.....
