Vang Vieng sits on the banks of a particularly clear stretch of river, nestled between the mountains. It truly is a beautiful place and someone had a genius idea!
How about if we take the inner tube from tractor tyres and rent them to travellers for the day so that they can float down stream at the speed of the current! Genius!
Wait a second! How about if we build rope swings and zip slides every 100 metres and sell Beer Lao along the way! Inspirred!
So at around 12 everyday 70 odd people pay about $3 for a tube and jump in a tuk-tuk to take them 3km's upstream. Promptly disrobe into their bathing suits before inserting themselves into the inner tube so that their ass floats in the water, before pushing away from the bank and letting the current slowly float them back to Vang Vieng. Along the way there is also the added benefit of letting the sun do it's work on their pasty white skin!
We were in the low season so if you didn't stop it would take around 2 hours to get back, in the high season the current is faster so maybe an hour. It took us 5 1/2 hours and I loved every minute! It was exactly as I could have imagined, replete with Jack Johnson and Bob Marley on the radio. It couldn't get more cliched if they tried but it is perfect.
There are probably 3 stops that everyone visits along the way down so they get pretty busy and there is a constant chorus of oh's, ah's and applause when someone does something outrageous on the rope swing and rapturous laughter when someone fails miserably and bellyflops into the water with an embarrased thud. It is the perfect way to while away the hours when on holiday and I'm sure it'll spring up all over the world.
Come evening I was pretty drunk. We ate dinner at Jaydee's before heading over to the Island bar to see what the fuss was about. It was dead and probably due to the fact they were playing no music. Still you have to walk over a cool wooden bridge to get there and I'm sure it'll get busier during the week.
