We had a rather adventurous 8 hour journey today from Shigatse to Shegar. The roads, if you can call them that, consisted of a dirt track with huge pot holes all over the place. Our driver didn't seem to care and blitzed along as if it were paved. We however held on as tight as possible to avoid headbutting the roof, which very nearly happened on a number of occasions.

On the way we stopped for lunch at a place called Latzi. Not really worth mentioning but as soon as we opened the car door we were surrounded by kids after our empty plastic bottles. I had seen people in China rummaging through bins collecting the empties so I assumed they get money for it?

Once in Shegar we were in shock. It was the most depressing place I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. There is one street with nothing to do, kids trying to sell you rocks and all the restaurants were seriously overpriced. It was 2pm and we weren't leaving until 8am tomorrow!

We also got screwed over by the hotel we stayed at. Our driver was a good guy but he was obviously under instruction to take us to certain hotels. We trusted him however so when he said it was the cheapest in town, who were we to argue?

We ended up with a filthy room with 3 beds between 4 people and they still wanted us to pay the full price. It didn't look like there was anywhere else in town and it was infinitely better than the cheaper room so we paid 90 yuan between us.

On looking around we saw quite a few other hotels, one even quoting 20 yuan for a double room! We went back to ask for a refund but they were having none of it. The owner and his servant just didn't care. They were the most arrogant arseholes I have ever met. Apparently their hotel is #1 recommended in the Tibet LP, somehow, and they obviously think that gives them some right to treat people like dirt.

Severely pissed off we informed them that we would sit and wait outside, nothing else better to do, and tell everyone who arrived about the hotel and advise them to take their business elsewhere. That is exactly what we did!

The second the next Jeep pulled up we waltzed into the courtyard and proceeded to tell them. Immense satisfaction when they turned round and went elsewhere. The owner wasn't best pleased however but we didn't care and waited around for the next car.

After doing it a couple more times we got bored, cold and hungry so went for dinner. All the restaurants in town are triple the price because only tourists ever stay there. The meal was ok but never worth that much.

Seeing as there was nothing else to do we went to bed. First we needed to move all the beds around and Dave, Louise and Jesper looked very cozy in the same bed! Oh well out of this hell hole tomorrow.
