So we kept walking down Nanjing Lu, at a very slow pace as it was still very crowded, to look for another place whilst constantly being asked if we wanted to buy shoes or DVD's. Finally found a place and was able to get some photos online.
Seeing as we were so close we carried on to check out the Bund again. It look equally impressive by day as it did by night. Fantastic European style architecture on our side of the river and brand new skyscrapers on the other. We were actually able to see the river today as the entrance wasn't cordoned off by the police.
Across the river is the very tacky Pearl tower so we decided to head over and check it out. Police were blocking the entrance to the subway so we had to take the crappy tourist rip off tunnel, 40yuan return, to go under the river and see a few strobe lights on the way. I would have rather paid the 3yuan to use the subway.
The Pearl tower was yet another rip-off. To go right to the top bauble was 100 yuan and was full so we had to settle for the second bauble, about 20 metres below, at 85 yuan. I'm glad we did as when we got inside the building we saw a theme park style 2 hour queuing system to go to the top deck. We just walked straight through and were up top within 5 minutes.
Spent the following 2 hours after the tower fighting our way back along Nanjing road through the endless sea of National week holidayers. We had planned to head to Maoming Lu tonight to find a bar showing the footie but amazingly they had shut the subway lines down by 9pm and there was no way to get a taxi.
So with nothing else to do we headed back to the Bund again along Nanjing Lu, in the hope of finding bar. Not one! Its the busiest shopping street in China and there is nowhere to stop for a drink. We had no choice but to follow everyone in the direction of the Bund and hope there was something going on. Apparently not. We had assumed there would be fireworks but nothing. Nothing to see but large groups of people attacking each other with inflatable mallets. We hung around for an hour but still nothing happened, apart from having to pose for pictures with random Chinese people.
Annoyed and defeated we headed back to the hostel. Spotted a couple of bars on the way and stopped for some expensive beers on the off chance of showing the footie but none were. There was a little bar at the hostel and we saw Nicole and Filip in there so joined them for a couple. It was BYOB so we grabbed a couple of really cheap large beers from the corner shop and played some cards for a while.
