Where I stayed

Today we were leaving HK and headed to Shanghai. The train wasn't leaving until 1pm so we checked out as late as possible. Once at the station we waited around until 12 reading and sorting out formalities like changing money before boarding the train shortly before 1pm.

Pandemonium ensued on the train as everyone pushed their way on whilst we patiently waited for them to load pretty much all their earthly belongings into their compartments. Finally located our berth and saw no one else there. Result! Or so we thought. 2 minutes later an elderly Chinese couple arrived for the bottom bunks. Bummer!

We were in the middle bunks in a tiny room with 6 beds. Quite where we were supposed to stash our bags if all 6 people were there I would never know but thankfully the top 2 bunks were empty. With our bags safely on the top bunk I was at least able to lie down. The train left at 1pm on the dot and wouldn't arrive in Shanghai until tomorrow afternoon.

It occurred to me then that it may have been a good idea to bring some food with me like everyone else! What was I going to eat for the next 24 hours? So went off in search of the food carriage, if there even was one. There was but it had no menu so we just grabbed a rice dinner from the trolley as it passed. Was OK but nothing special, pretty cheap though considering train food is normally ridiculously over priced.

Stomach somewhat filled I settled down for a few hours of mp3 and diary writing time, and quickly finished the book I was reading. The elderly couple had been burping and farting way constantly since they entered but at least they didn't smoke. We had hidden the ashtray the second we arrived anyway! The lights went out so I assumed it was time for bed so settled down in hope of some decent sleep.
