Thursday Oct 19th - Fiumefreddo, Calatabiano, Gola di Alcantara,

We drove back to Randazzo and stopped at a hotel where we found a girl who spoke english. She was nice enough to make the call to Renato. He said he would be right there. We made ourselves comfortable, put the family history in order and ordered a few drinks. Soon a man, younger than I expected, clean cut and well dressed walked through the door, it was Renato. We had a handshake and the traditional kiss on each cheek as he introduced us to his daughter Federica. He asked where in Australia we were from and what my mothers name is. I had to explain in the few Italian words that I know how we were related. Turns out he never knew he had cousins in America! He was quick to invite us to his house and told us his wife would be making dinner for us. We jumped into our car and followed him through the rain and twisty turns on our way out of town. Soon were were in a small town on the other side of one of the hills and pulled up to his house. He seemed happy and surprised we were there. Inside the timeless old building we found a nice new house. Everything look new. We met his wife and his other daughter and followed along as he explained where we were from and what we were doing in Sicily.
Everyone was so nice. Renato explained how he received the message we were there two days ago , but did not know where we were staying. I guess he was real excited to meet us, but had no way to contact us. I pulled out the old pictures of my grandfathers of Renatos mother, aunts and grandparents. Renato really enjoyed it. It looked like he was seeing many of these pictures for the first time.
