night train to Rome
Entry 30 of 196 | show all | print this entry |
Florence/Pisa/Rome Monday September 25th 2006 We arrived in Rome late at night during a rain storm. We were met by a guy that smelled like booze and spoke only English. He kept say that his friend has a place. His cell phone was dead, so he had to call on a public phone. After a few minutes we were starting to loose interest. But soon an older fellow with a pony tail showed up and asked if we want to see his place. He said he had others staying there right now from all over the world America, Australia, etc. Only a five minute walk to Via Cernaia. It did seem a little shady, but everything was closed and the only other option was to walk the streets in the rain and hope for a decent room at a decent price. We walked with his for about twenty minutes. The whole way Lyn kept ducking into hotels to check the prices. When he opened the door to his house, it was a bit scary. All the trim was painted bright red and there was stuff all over the place. It did smell like there was a lot of people there and a few of them were smokers. He showed us around and introduced us to the other boarders in the 8 person bedroom. There was I thought for sure Lyn would be out the door, but being tired and wet from the rain she wanted to stay. We put our bags downs and joined in on the conversation. There was a guy from Peru, two girls from Slovakia, turns out the guy from the US is actually Iranian and the two girls from Australia that were out at the bar are actually Austrian. But everyone seem nice and they were laughing and joking. I guess it was not only me that thought things were a little creepy. The others joked that they were all new tenants because the guy w/the ponytail had killed the previous visitors. Not real funny, but it did add to the atmosphere. We all shared a few stories about our travels and gave each other leads and prices as well as tips for any city we would be staying in. A couple hours passed and it was time for bed. The girls came back from the disco and just as the others had said, they changed for bed right in front of us. I guess things are different in Austria. Lights out.
