It is never good to be woken up out of a sound sleep by the train conductor, but 1:45am is especially bad. Yelling in Spanish... something about disembarking in Cordoba. Was I dreaming? Are we in Argentina alrerdy? Wow, it took a few minutes to realize I was not dreaming and there was a serious problem with our train. We arrive in Cordoba and were hearded onto buses for a 1 hour ride to a small remote train staion. After 1 more hour a train finally arrived. At 4AM we were drifting off to sleep once again with the lull of the train. We could not get a good answer as to what had happened, but we are assuming the tracks were either under a mud slide (bulldozers had to clear the highway for the bus) or flooded out.

We knew it would be close in Madrid, but 5 minutes was just not enough time to catch our connection to Barcelona once we arrived in Madrid. Since we missed our reservation, the ticket desk wanted us to pay an extra €48 to take the next train! Lyn was not having that! Wether they spoke English or not, she gave them an earful. €6 later we were booked on the 5:30 to Barcelona (along with Rosie and Chris from Australia). Took some time to update our Travelpod Blog, wash some laundry grab some groceries in Madrid.

Leaving Madrid the scenery was nice. Within minutes we were in a country side of golden straw and farms of redish earth with pink and yellow hues. There were fields of sunflowers, a week past their prime and some awesome mountains of stone. The passing storm made it even more dramatic with the multicolored sky and the now dark brown creeks and rivers.

Eventually made it to Barcelona and found a small hotel between the train station and La Ramblas, near the water. Ditched our bags and headed to La Ramblas for a stroll and some food. Found a nice Cervaceria with a multitude of tapas, raciones, bocatillos and good cold beer. After several selections (chorizo, escargot, crab claws, mini bruchetas, insalata da mar) we headed back for some much needed sleep.
