Day trip to Normandy France.

Up at 6am for a day trip to Cherbourg. Surrounded by the Seine Bay and Gulf of Saint-Malo, Cherbourg sits at the end of the Cotentin Peninsula on the English Channel. We had trouble getting a taxi and we ended up missing our train. The next train was at 10am so we went back to 'Friends Hostel' to kill some time. We decided to walk to the train station with a few stops on the way. There was the bakery that smelled great. There were many pastries here that we avent seen in the states. The one that looked the best was a long pastry with crispy cheese over te top ad a foot long sticking out of the one end. For 3 and a hlf Euro... this would make a perfect snack for the 2+ hour train ride. We eventually found our train and were heading out of the citypast alot of rolling hill farmland with the whitest cows I had ever seen. Passing Liseux, Caen, Bayeux, Lison, Carentan Saint-Marie-du-mont and Valogars... When we booked our Eurail ticket the representative booked a day trip to Cherbourg to see the battlefields of D-Day. Once we arrived in Cherbourg we realized we had received bad information. Although this was a historic site... Napolean was here, the Titanic was here and it was a key point on June 25th, 1944 where the Germans had a stronghold, it was NOT a D-Day site. We hiked up to a medieval fort with amazing panoramic views of the area and walked around town and public gardens. We asked the attendant at the train ticket booth and were advised to take the next train heading back to Paris and get off at Bayeux to see all the D-Day sites. (i.e. Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, etc.), bu the train passed right by -no scheduled stop on this train!! And you would think there would be more signs and tourist info for a place that seems so popular. This was especially disappointing since we had hoped to see the site that Lyn's grandfather had landed on D-Day.
