Flag of Nicaragua  , Rivas,

Ometepe Island is formed by 2 Volcanoes (Conception and Maderas) that rise from Lake Nicaragua.  Conception is Active and considered one of the most perfectly formed volcanoes in Central America (1610m).  The most recent eruption was in 2010. This eruption was extremely violent; however few of the island's inhabitants heeded the order from the government in Managua to evacuate the island.

We stay on an organic coffee farm (really good cafe!) at the base of volcano Maderas and book a guide for the following morning...  8 hour 10km return hike which takes us through a diverse rain forest, past ancient Petroglyphs (rock carvings) to the Maderas crater lake (1394m).  Really muddy up and down but we make it...  Cloudy at the top, the crater lake appears for a few moments.  We have a quick lunch in the crater on the banks of the lake and then start heading down - really slippery it takes a bit longer...  On the way down we see howler monkeys, white face monkeys and a dangerous snake above the path, then pass the coffee plantation and arrive back at the finca (farm). Volcano experience and trek can now be ticked of the todo list - so stiff from the hike and stoked!
Buggered, have dinner, aqua and some excellent Nicaraguan Ron and decide to head to Granada the following morning around 11am.
