We left a day later than we otherwise would have, because we wanted to attend a talk last night by the Anthropological Society about Shenzhen's importance to China. So we started early this morning via MTR and KCR to the LoWu border, which was surprisingly quick to cross, despite the large crowd of people to be processed.

Trains to Guangzhou were booked out until 2:30 p.m. so we went to find some lunch at Seasons Coffee Place, which has a great value business lunch for Y28. We had main courses of braised spare ribs and braised duck, with rice, Chinese vegetables and soup, a good salad buffet and a couple of decent desserts. It beats a lot of meals we've had in Hong Kong for at least twice the price.

When we reached Guangzhou it was miserable wet weather, so we decided to get a train tonight rather than spend a night and get the more convenient morning one. This train leaves at 11:24 p.m. and arrives in Guiyang about 22 hours later, which means finding a hotel late at night.

The crowds at the station were a bit overwhelming, but at least we managed to get sleepers - two middle ones - and the price was only Y292 each. We had several hours to wait so, despite the rain, we went for a walk along one of the roads leading out from the station. The whole district is dedicated to garments of all kinds and got a bit boring after a while.

We are now in a little Muslim restaurant off the main street, where we had a bowl of noodles and a delicious spicy barbecued fish on a stick. We always eat well in China, whether it's street food or an up-market restaurant. We're relaxing here sipping tea before beginning the walk back to the station, where the queues extend across the big square outside the station entrance. Well, they did when we arrived. It's probably still the same now.
