In Amsterdam we stayed at one of the two official youth hostels, booked in advance thanks to our special train ticket which gave us unlimited travel for any three days in a ten-day period. Otherwise we would not have got in. There are a lot of "cheap" travellers places along the canals in Amsterdam but they are always booked out very quickly. The main difference between the official hostels and the others is that you are not allowed to smoke marijuana in the hostel - there is always a group sitting on the steps outside for this purpose. However there is a bar, and the dormitories are mixed. There were several couples staying in our dorm. I suppose they make some attempt to keep couples in one place. There do seem to be some single-sex rooms. Apart from the wonderful Van Gogh museum, where we spent almost a whole day, the highlight was a theatre restaurant comedy show called Boom Boom Chicago, a group of Americans who did very clever improvisations and a lot of topical jokes about Amsterdam. Their publicity was very clever too. They gave out a free Guide to Amsterdam to people queuing up outside the Van Gogh museum. It was very informative and humorous and gave the reader a foretaste of their comic style, thus making us want to see the show. Despite a ten guilder discount with this magazine, the evening was not cheap, but it was definitely worth going. Even the food was quite good for a theatre restaurant.
