I'm looking at a full bodied sea turtle that's resting on the shore, eyes half closed....body appears to be fully relaxed...and  it occurs to me that s/he doesn't know whether s/he is resting on the beach of a state park, or downtown Kona amongst the chain restaurants and cruise ship tourists, or a deserted stretch of inaccessible and rarely traversed shoreline, or a larger than life resort hotel, or a squatters shack...its all the same to this turtle, its all about resting and maybe getting a little sun on its back.

I myself know where I am sitting.   I thought I'd check out one of the super resorts on the north Kona shore...the places that are tightly manicured, offer luxury accommodations, a full schedule of activities, a golf course and a private beach...private everything actually.  I've been camping at some of the most beautiful campgrounds I could imagine...going to sleep and waking up each day to the sound of waves rhythmically reaching the shore, the water only steps away from my tent.  I can't imagine anything more desirable.  But of course I know that isn't for everyone...don't exactly know how one could resist such a set up but I know there are folks who'd rather be snugly inside a hotel room with a balcony outside their door over which to view the all the other amenities that go with the room including the beyond expensive price tag.  So I want to get a feel for one of these places...maybe see if I'm missing anything...just curious.  And I'm not going to carry on about which might be "better" or 'worse" than the other....not going to compare the two in any concrete way...because it would be all according to me and my needs /wishes....I'll leave all that analysis to the person making the choice....I can only know what's best for me.

But yesterday, as I walked along the shore of a remote stretch of land I passed some rather extravagant homes...apparently one was the home (it really looked more like a compound) of the brain behind the pacemaker, another the home (or one of the homes) of Paul Mitchell, the hairstylist....these were large luxuriant expansive living quarters.  But right along side them I also passed a surfers shack...boards stacked in the front room, which appeared to be the kitchen - an open air kitchen - and all sorts of ocean paraphernalia such as nets, buoys and the like which seemed to have been collected over a long period of time and were lovingly arranged around the shack.  I also passed simpler don't need much shelter to live here...some people were long term camping in unauthorized places, or just living out of their vehicle.   But whatever the living situation, all of the residents shared the same view, of ocean, of sunset, and perhaps of playful dolphins or sea turtles popping their heads above the water or beaching in the sun.

So what am I trying to say here?  Just sharing some musings really...but as I sit at Mauna Lani, on a richly padded lounge chair pretending to have the key to a room in the hotel and on some level, ready and waiting to be discovered as an imposter and ejected from the resort grounds, I see this sea turtle and recognize that s/he is unaware of whose shore s/he now rests, of the status of anyone who might observe her.  And there seems to be something really significant in that for me....

Dear Karen,

at least I managed to create my own User-ID to be able to comment your blog entries from time to time. Hopefully you remember me: I'm Norbert, the guy from Puno and Arequipa (Peru), Gisela's spouse. Hello and how are you?

It almost seems incredible, you are still travelling throughout the world??? Hawai isn't the badest place to stay in these days, is it? We are wondering what are your next plans to go to. More western?

Wishing you all the best an waiting for more input.

Take care and share our hugs with Lisa.
