Day 21: Houayxai - Laos

We get back on the river for the second part of our trip. First we get some sandwiches though as there's no food sold on the boat. We order some chicken sandwiches that we saw on the menu and are told to wait five minutes. A bit later a guy comes from outside the place where we ordered our sandwiches to bring us our food, saying 'we didn't know how to make chicken sandwiches, so these are egg sandwiches'. It amuses me greatly. :D

The boat ride is pretty much the same as yesterday - it rains most of the time which is fine by me as it's nice and cool all day.

We get to Houayxai around 6 pm, which is too late to cross into Thailand (on the opposite side of the river) as the border closes at 5.30 pm. So we stay in Laos for one more night. Houayxai is a relief after Pakbeng, there is no rugby scrum anywhere in sight when we get off the boat. We just get off and nobody seems to give a damn a bunch of tourists just arrived, which I quite like. It's the first time we have to actually go look for a guesthouse ourselves. :D We settle on a very nice guesthouse just around the corner from where the boat arrived and go have dinner in town at a riverside restaurant and spend another evening looking at Thailand (seems to be becoming a recurring theme). A guy at the restaurant sets up his keyboard and after a while several guys take their turns singing songs - some better than others. Eventually we flee back to our guesthouse. :D
