I've got to be better about keeping up with this. I can't remember anything after so much other exciting stuff has happened! Today we started our short story unit in World Lit. It wasn't so bad; Dr. Pratt read a story aloud, a story I really liked, and we talked about it for a while. We got our exams back - I had a 9.2 out of 10 which is a High Distinction on our Australian grading system from Maquarie (an HD is the equivalent of a very high A) and I think Dr. Pratt needs to spend some more time with the grading system. I'm cool with having a high distinction but Maquarie's going to audit all of the marking and I think our curve is going to be in trouble. Anyway I did really well on the test.
I know there are things I was going to talk about today and I can't remember what they were! I got okayed to buy into the AFP in Panama and I'm sooooo excited! Their folkloric festival, it turns out, is not actually going on, but I guess we'll be helping them do some planning for next year. I hope the "folkloric nights" will still be going on - that is the coolest part of the whole program.
I did spend a lot of time out on deck today; I went out to sit and write and of course got no writing done. The internet was way too slow because so many people were online so I just sat there listening to music, then ended up falling asleep (gee there's a surprise) and woke up just in time to get ready for class. I need to do that WAY more often - there's nothing in the world like sleeping outside.
We had one of our better Global Issues classes this afternoon; we have a different teacher now that we've switched units; now we're on Demographics. The professor gave us a music quiz to take attendance, which I thought was brilliant and quite a bit of fun; she played four songs from different parts of the world and asked us to see if we could narrow down where they came from. Of course all of mine were very wrong but it didn't matter that much; she just wanted to know we were there. The session started off well but the professor's power point got more and more boring, and then she set us on finding solutions to the problem of sweatshops and child labor in developing countries, and as everything does with this group it set us on a debate that prevented us from going early. She probably would have let us out of class at least half an hour early if we hadn't been so set on arguing about everything. Oy!
After that I worked on my pictures some more, and finally got everything tagged and all of my sunsets dated correctly. I decided I would get everything onto my computer and copy it to my flash drive for backup so that I could reformat my card; it gets harder and harder to upload certain ones to my computer because every time I do it, they get more and more mixed. I can't find anything. So I'll use my flash as my backup copy and reformat my card so I don't lose stuff. I didn't get quite to that point, but I got everything tagged and ready to move. Of course now I have several hundred more pictures from the Canal and stuff, but that's a story for another entry.
We must have done something exciting tonight, right? What was it, do you suppose? There was no salsa class, and... wait. Yes there was. There was a salsa class. I led again, of course (it's almost a curse that I can) but the girl I was dancing with kept trying to "teach" me how to lead, which I soon learned was essentially letting her lead. So I did, no big deal I guess. I made the comment offhand that I'd done this a lot before too and she said "Oh I've never done it I've just heard how" so I figured I just go with it, it'd be easier. Then her "regular partner" showed up late and she wanted to dance with him instead, so I wandered around the fringe of the dancing trying to find another partner and there was another girl down on the carpet trying to learn the part by herself, so I asked her to dance with me. She is a good dancer, and follows well too. We had a lot of fun and Carla even choreographed a dip into our routine! It was great; I can't wait to put it to some use. Too bad I won't know how to dance with the guys! I might not get the chance anyway; our homestay certainly won't be near any salsa clubs and I don't know if there will be a night free after we've come back. I know I won't get to town; the entire AFP takes place in the rainforest and countryside and the last day I have a shore excursion into the Cloud Forest. Anyway. The dancing. I actually had a lot of fun dancing the guy's part - I like it. It's not as flashy or as sexy but it's fun; too bad I won't really be able to use it. That's the bummer.
I just went back to my cabin after the salsa class. We were there until almost 11:30 learning the most complex routine she'd come up for us yet and I was exhausted. I just went to bed early; the next day was going to be a free day and I knew everyone else would be sleeping and the internet would be good.
